About
I'm Joshua — an engineer by day and a tinkerer the rest of the time, based just north of Cincinnati.
I'd rather own the box than rent the service. So I run language models on my own PC, host my websites on a server I set up myself, and (once Black Friday comes around) I'll have a 3D printer back on the bench.
Why this site exists
I write down everything I figure out, mostly so future me doesn't have to figure it out twice. Every post here is a build log: what I was trying to do, what I tried, what broke, and the scripts or settings that finally worked.
If it saves you an evening, even better.
The three tracks
- Local AI on Windows — LM Studio, local agents, and the tooling around them.
- Self-hosting — Docker, a homemade hosting panel, backups, and keeping it all secure.
- Maker bench — 3D printing and CAD, back once the new printer arrives.
I also build sites
I build websites for local groups and organizations. Those live on joshcombs.com.
