You may remember the post I made about SoPA (IP Act) that I made back in 2011, well since then the people we have voted into power to help protect us from the evils of big governments are conspiring once again to lock down the internet. There are many reason’s behind it, but we are the ones who have the most to lose when it comes to our rights on the internet being restricted. Companies who have signed up to stand behind the CISPA act have the most to gain as they can basically claim rights to anything that resembles their trademarks, properties and ect. This means while the creators and users of the internet are going to be punished for their actions and fines will follow, or pay a licensing fee for the use of the likeness. Also this will add onto already put into place legislation for the Department of Homeland Security, The Patriot Act and will allow our government to collect/review our information for the main purpose of spying on us to see if we are any threat to our government.

This is what wikipedia defines what CISPA is

The Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act (CISPA) is a proposed law in the United States which would allow for the sharing of Internet traffic information between the U.S. government and certain technology and manufacturing companies. The stated aim of the bill is to help the U.S government investigate cyber threats and ensure the security of networks against cyberattack.

PIPA,SOPA and CISPA feels like something from V for Vendetta

Companies who oppose CISPA

Craigslist

Reddit

Namecheap

Mozilla,

Automattic/Wordpress

I admit the list of the companies who oppose is a small list, but look at how many users each service has. Between WordPress and Reddit have billions of subscribers and they both have a lot at stake if this passes.

Write to your local Congress man/woman by going to http://www.cispaisback.org/ and sending the following message

Dear Representative,

I am writing to urge you to vote NO on CISPA, the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act. This is a dangerous and poorly worded bill that would grant corporations sweeping legal immunity when they share my private data with the government. CISPA hurts privacy and civil liberties, and won’t improve security. Please vote NO on CISPA.

Once again please go to http://www.cispaisback.org/

There are a lot of options online to store your data, I will be going through a few of the big contenders today. We will be reviewing Dropbox, Skydrive from Microsoft, Amazon Cloud Drive, Google Drive and Box.net. This is a non biased review as I have accounts on all of these services and I use them all equally and I will note why I use one over the others in more detail further down in this article.

The biggest perk of cloud/online storage is to be able to get your important information from anywhere and any device. I usually keep my photo’s and important documents backed up on Google Drive and Dropbox as they both have apps for Android and iOS. I am a technology nut and always switch from my Android phone to Apple iOS so being able to have my information in a convenient place so I never really lose anything.

Why should you keep your data in the cloud over keeping my data on flash drives or external drives?

Cloud storage is always available and you do not have to worry about remembering to grab your flash drive or external hard drive. While it is always vital to have your important data saved in 3 places just in case of a fire or natural disaster you will always be able to retain your important data. The only issue you will run into with this method is keeping the data up to date.

The tools will only work if you save the information to the folders that you have designated to upload from. So if you save all of your important files to My Documents and your important document has been stored elsewhere and has not been updated it will not be saved with the latest information. So keep in mind if you use any back up solution to have it set up to save in all of the areas that you save your files too.

I use My Desktop, My Documents and Download folder as my primary back up sources. This ensures that I do not miss anything important to me. The only problem you may run into with using a folder like Downloads with a backup solution will be you will quickly run out of space unless you have an high amount of storage capacity. I was able to get in on a few upgraded perks from DropBox, Box.net and Skydrive by following certain tech related people on Facebook and Twitter.

The top online storage providers.

in no particular order.

DropBox – offers new users 2 gb of free space and you can earn up to 18 gb free via referring other users and connecting your DropBox to other services.

Box.net – offers new users 5 gb of free space on their system

Google Drive – offers users 5 gb of free online storage.

Skydrive from Microsoft offers 7 gb of free online storage for users. You can use your Microsoft Account from Hotmail to sign in.

Amazon Cloud Drive – offers users 7 gb of online storage.

Each one of these services have mobile apps for Android and iOS (currently Skydrive does not have a dedicated iOS app.)

I am pleased to share with you, my new app that I have been creating for the Android operating system. It has been tested on JellyBean so it should work on Ice Cream Sandwich and Gingerbread, but I need some beta testers to try out my app. I will continue to work on this app to show all of my posts and pictures like some of the other apps you may have seen from other sites. Also I am working to integrate my Twitter stream into the app as well.

Looks like AT&T is making good with their promise to have 4g live in more markets by the end of the year. It was announced a couple of weeks ago that Cincinnati was on the list to have 4g by the end of the year, and it appears they have switched it on tonight! Hopefully it is here to stay and not just a testing exercise. I am receiving the same speeds I was from Verizon when I had the Galaxy Nexus. I will show you some comparison shots from Verizon and AT&T.

I am happy that AT&T finally got rid of the HSPA+ because it was very slow and not technically using all of my resources that my phone had at it’s disposal. Then again maybe the update to LTE is so all of the new shiny iPhone5 iPhones can utilize the speed and make Apple look good? But what ever the reason I am happy for it!

Today Tim Cook announced the iPhone5 from the Moscone Center in California. This is the third time that he has taken to the stage, the last appearance was to announce the New iPad. During this keynote it was apparent that Tim Cook was not comfortable filling Steve Jobs shoes instead he had his key developers come up and share the new information instead of selling it to us himself. Today Tim went over some of the key figures that keeps Apple driving. But let other developers give the key presentation on the new changes.

84 Million iPads sold since the first roll out.

17 Million iPads have been sold from April 2012 – June 2012

Apple has the #1 notebook in the PC market

7 Million Mountain Lion upgrades

Over 700k apps in the Apple app store

over 400 Million iOS devices sold (not known if all iOS devices are included or just iPhones)

iPhone5 (Phil Schiller guided us through)

It appears all of the leaks and rumors were correct. It is just a longer version of the iPhone4s and it has upgraded internal bits, and a new widescreen landscape display. Most apps should run natively on the phone and movies should be viewed better with the widescreen capabilities. Also they have tuned the display to have 44% more color saturation so the colors will pop even more, if you want to think of it as a supercharged Retina display. Check out my other post for further specs.

This phone does have the LTE/HSPA+/4Gchip installed in it! There’s now a single chip for voice and data, and a single radio chip. And has a unique Apple advantage with a dynamic antenna. This means that the data should move at a faster pace, but you are still limited to your carriers speeds.

The iPhone5 has the new A6 chipset in it, which means it will move much faster with the 1 gb of ram also paired with the new hardware. Phil stated that the new A6 chip is double the speed of the old A5 chip.

The iPhone5 has a 1080p rear camera and a 720p front facing camera. The camera now has face detection.

The new iPhone5 has 3 microphones 1 at the bottom, 1 at the top near the ear piece and one on the back next to the camera.

New speaker design to make sound even better it has a 5 magnet transducer and it is 20% smaller than the previous iPhone speaker. Also the earpiece is a noise cancelling earpiece and the overall sound quality has been broadened with Wideband audio.

The new iDevices will have a new Lightning power charger, this is similar to the mag safe adapters for the Macbook Pro. They will have adapters to convert the old 24pin adapters to the Lightning adapters.

Pricing $199 For 16GB, $299 For 32GB, $399 For 64GB

iOS 6

Apple is showing off the newest version of their iOS and it looks like they borrow some key features from other operating systems and apps that have been made famous on their own iOS app store( Keyring app that keeps all of your membership cards in digital form). They are showing off photo stream sharing (rip off of Samsung Galaxy Share), updates to Siri and other general os updates to Maps Siri.

You can preorder the phone on September 14th and it should ship by the end of September.

Today is the big day for all Apple fans everywhere, it is the day that we learn what new features will be included in the 7th version of the iPhone. The new iPhone5 has been the most leaked iPhone to date, even with the iPhone4 snafu that happened when Brian J. Hogan left a prototype at a bar does not equal the amount of leaks that have been revealed. This shows how much of a tight ship that Steve Jobs ran when it came to keeping future products under tight wraps. If nothing is leaked out it makes the experience of the keynote more magical. This is what made Steve Jobs shine compared to other people who go on stage to debut their products. Now that we have had so many leaks with the iPhone5 can we really be excited for it?

So far this is what we know about the iPhone5

I am sticking with my Samsung Galaxy S3 until the hype and all of the problems that follow a Apple iPhone release have been worked out. So I am shooting for early next year for when I will be getting an iPhone5

Could apple be planning on bringing the Apple experience to the television? Could they be doing it to prove to Google that a smart tv can be made if it is made correctly? I think Apple will do very well if they make it similar to the AppleTV that has been released in the past, but if they are thinking about bringing a Apple experience as a hardware addon they will do fine, but if they get into the television hardware market they will not do so well. As everyone knows the Apple hardware is generally pretty pricey. You will always have your devotee’s who will run out and buy one on the first day, but they will be in the ball park of 1500-2500 dollars ( this is my guess).

My question to you, would you spend 1500+ on a smart TV? It may be happening sooner than you think as Apple has one a patent in the cable tv area of expertise today. (PatentlyApple)

Looking to get the latest version of Android, 4.1 Jelly Bean onto the Samsung Galaxy S3 for AT&T, but don’t want to wait for Samsung’s official update? Pay attention, because below are the instructions on installing CyanogenMod 10 (CM10) for the Galaxy S3, courtesy of CyanogenMod.

Still, if Project Butter and Google Now are desirable features then read on for installing CyanogenMod 10. Bear in mind that there is a risk of damage to your device and CincyGeek.com is not responsible for consequences users could experience.

How-to

Download the CM10 ROM for the AT&T Galaxy S3 from the XDA-Developers forum thread. Then download the Google App package, and copy the ROM and App package onto the SD card.

Now, switch off the Galaxy S3 to boot into ClockworkMod recovery. There are 2 methods you can use to get into the recovery console.

1. Open up RomManager and go to the option that states “Reboot into Recovery”

2. By pressing Volume Up, the Home button, and the power button together once the phone has been powered off will boot into the recovery mode. When the screen turns on, stop pressing the buttons. Wait a moment and a list of options will be presented; navigation is done through the volume buttons (up/down) and selecting options is done via the Home button.

Navigate to “wipe data/factory reset,” select the option, and then “Yes” to confirm. After the aforementioned information is wiped, choose the install zip option from the SDcard. Navigate to the ROM file, and select “Yes” again to begin installation.

Once installation is complete, choose the zip file again and the Google Apps package “gapps-jb-20120716.zip” file. After being selected, return to the main recovery menu and select the option to reboot.

Afterwards, CM10 will be installed on the Samsung Galaxy S3. There are 2 other flashable packages you will need to install to make your phone more usable. As at this time the camera and text messages are not working as they should.

1. cameradata_CWM.zip – This allows the camera to actually work. If you do not install this package everytime you go to something that utilizes the camera you will get “Can not connect to camera”

2. Mms.zip – this allows messages to be send as text messages and not as Multimedia messages.

Once all of these items are installed you can enjoy the smoothness of Jelly Bean. *Note I used this rom for a couple of days and the battery life was not good enough for what I needed. It ran dead in matter of hours. Once they get the stability of CM9 ported over to the CM10 Rom I will be using this rom again.

I was really disappointed with Verizon and AT&T when I heard they opted out of the free 50gb dropbox promotion that European and Sprint users are able to take advantage of. As good luck would have it the good folks over at XDA-Developers have found a way to get past this little hiccup. There are a few different methods that I will be sharing with you.

The first method is to flash a rom that is based off of a carrier that is partaking in this promotion. Teleus, Rogers, Sprint and ect. A lot of members of XDA are having good luck with Diet ICS

The second method is to root your phone using The Samsung Galaxy Tool Box. It is similar to the Galaxy Nexus Toolbox I used before. If you want the Samsung Galaxy Toolbox please click here! After you have rooted your phone download this zip file

Follow the instructions in the text file. Also after you are done if you are a member of XDA-Developers go post in this thread and say thanks to Gamer113

I performed this and got my spare space.

I wanted to use Cyanogen Mod on my Verizon Nexus so I first needed to root my phone so I used the Galaxy Nexus ToolKit you can read my previous post about how to use the toolkit [HERE]

I selected my current Rom which at the time was ICS 4.0.2

Then I made my selection to unlock my bootloader, Root my Phone, and other options by pressing option 7

Then after it was done rooting, I went to the Google Play store and downloaded Rom Manager by ClockworkMod

Install Titanium Backup. Run Titanium Backup and save all of your apps and data.

Download the ROM installation ZIP for your phone and place it onto your SD Card.

Reboot your phone to Recovery mode, scroll down to “backup and restore”, go in, and select the “Backup” option. This will write an image of your phone onto your SD Card. OS, your apps and settings will be saved.

Perform a full wipe of your device from Recovery by doing a “wipe data/factory reset”, “wipe cache partition”, and “advanced -> Wipe Dalvik Cache”.

Select “install zip from card” option, and then “choose zip from sdcard” to flash the ROM zip that you downloaded in step 2.

Optionally, flash the GApps package, and any other files (refer to the ROM’s instructions.)

Once the installation is completed reboot the phone, add your Google account, and set up the system to your lining (do not download any 3rd-party apps yet.)

Open the Market app, install AppBrain and Fast Web Installer again, and sign in.

Open the Appbrain app, and enable Fast Web Installer in settings again.

While still inside the Appbrain app, go to “Manage And Sync”, press the Menu button, select the “More lists..” option. Pick the list that was created for you in step 1, and press the “Add all apps” button. This will queue up all the missing apps that you had installed on the previous ROM.

Go back once, and tap the “Execute” button. After verifying the permissions, tap the Install button. This will automatically download and re-install your apps.

Once the apps are installed, configure them to your liking.

Reboot back into Recovery, perform another backup, and reboot the phone normally.

Open the ROM Manager app, and tap on “Manage and Restore Backups.” You should see a list consisting of the 2 backups you just made, sorted chronologically.
