Looking to get the latest version of Android, 4.1 Jelly Bean onto the Samsung Galaxy S3 for AT&T, but don’t want to wait for Samsung’s official update? Pay attention, because below are the instructions on installing CyanogenMod 10 (CM10) for the Galaxy S3, courtesy of CyanogenMod.

Still, if Project Butter and Google Now are desirable features then read on for installing CyanogenMod 10. Bear in mind that there is a risk of damage to your device and CincyGeek.com is not responsible for consequences users could experience.

How-to

Download the CM10 ROM for the AT&T Galaxy S3 from the XDA-Developers forum thread. Then download the Google App package, and copy the ROM and App package onto the SD card.

Now, switch off the Galaxy S3 to boot into ClockworkMod recovery. There are 2 methods you can use to get into the recovery console.

1. Open up RomManager and go to the option that states “Reboot into Recovery”

2. By pressing Volume Up, the Home button, and the power button together once the phone has been powered off will boot into the recovery mode. When the screen turns on, stop pressing the buttons. Wait a moment and a list of options will be presented; navigation is done through the volume buttons (up/down) and selecting options is done via the Home button.

Navigate to “wipe data/factory reset,” select the option, and then “Yes” to confirm. After the aforementioned information is wiped, choose the install zip option from the SDcard. Navigate to the ROM file, and select “Yes” again to begin installation.

Once installation is complete, choose the zip file again and the Google Apps package “gapps-jb-20120716.zip” file. After being selected, return to the main recovery menu and select the option to reboot.

Afterwards, CM10 will be installed on the Samsung Galaxy S3. There are 2 other flashable packages you will need to install to make your phone more usable. As at this time the camera and text messages are not working as they should.

1. cameradata_CWM.zip – This allows the camera to actually work. If you do not install this package everytime you go to something that utilizes the camera you will get “Can not connect to camera”

2. Mms.zip – this allows messages to be send as text messages and not as Multimedia messages.

Once all of these items are installed you can enjoy the smoothness of Jelly Bean. *Note I used this rom for a couple of days and the battery life was not good enough for what I needed. It ran dead in matter of hours. Once they get the stability of CM9 ported over to the CM10 Rom I will be using this rom again.

————————————————————–
————————————————————–

1. INSTALLING ADB/FASTBOOT DRIVERS

The first thing you need to do is to install the adb/fastboot drivers. These are needed so that you can unlock your bootloader, root your phone and flash CWM (ClockworkMod) Recovery.

THE DRIVERS CAN NOW BE INSTALLED DIRECTLY VIA THE TOOLKIT. OPTION 1 IN THE MAIN MENU.
IF YOU HAVE ANY TROUBLE WITH THE TOOLKIT INSTALLING THE DRIVERS PLEASE POST IN THIS THREAD WITH YOUR OPERATING SYSTEM VERSION AND ERROR MESSAGE.

a. If you dont want to use the ToolKit to install the drivers then the best best drivers to try are PdaNet for Android, download and run the 32-bit Windows 7/Vista/XP or 64-bit Windows 7/Vista and follow the instructions to install (selecting Samsung as your device manufacturer if asked).

You can remove pdanet for Android from your phone and pc at a later time without removing the drivers.

b. After the drivers have been installed disconnect the usb cable and shut down your phone. Keep holding the ‘Volume Up’ and ‘Volume Down’ buttons and press the ‘Power’ button to boot the phone into FastBoot Mode.

c. Goto your Control Panel on your PC and open the Device Manager. You want this open so you can see the FastBoot driver is installed or so you can install it manually.

d. Connect the usb cable. In the Device Manager a new item called ‘Android 1.0′ should pop up and then the driver should install automatically. Once it is installed you will have a new section in the Device Manager called Android Phone without an “!” meaning its installed correctly.

Note 1: If the driver doesnt install automatically then double click on the Android 1.0 item, then click on the driver tab and select ‘update driver’. Select ‘browse my computer’ and then ‘Let me pick from a list’. If no items appear in the list then untick ‘Show compatible hardware’ and find the Android adb driver or Samsung adb driver.

Note 2: If you are still having problems setting up the fastboot drivers then have a read of *THIS* guide which may help you.

Note 3: Samsung Verizon Drivers can be downloaded *HERE*. These drivers will most probably only work on LTE devices.

Note 4: Sprint users may have better luck downloading drivers from *HERE* (click on ‘See All Downloads’ then select ‘Software’ at the bottom) if you cant get the automatic drivers to work from the ToolKit.

————————————————————–
————————————————————–

2. USING MSKIPS’ GALAXY NEXUS TOOLKIT V7.0

a. Download the Galaxy Nexus ToolKit package and run to install the ToolKit to your PC. The installation will also create a Shortcut on your desktop for easy access. You now have the option to include or exclude the drivers files at installation so if you already have your drivers set up and are just updating the ToolKit then you can untick the drivers if you wish.

b. Once the ToolKit is installed put your phone into Fastboot Mode (Hold ‘Volume Up’ and ‘Volume Down’ buttons whilst pressing the ‘Power’ Button) and double click on the ‘Galaxy Nexus ToolKit v5.2′ shortcut on your desktop to run it. You can also connect your phone whilst it is in Android as it detects adb mode and you can boot to Fastboot from the Main Menu if you want to.

c. The first screen will ask you which model and Build you have (GSM or LTE) and set up the Main Menu accordingly.

d. When you enter the Main Menu you will see ‘Fastboot Mode’ and ‘Adb Mode’ at the top. If you have installed your drivers correctly then you will see your phones serial number under the mode you are in at the time. If you see this then your device is connected and you can carry on.

e. Each option has full information on what it is and how to use it.

f. After you have finished you can either boot straight into CWM Recovery to flash a Custom Rom (if you have already downloaded one and copied it to the root of your Internal Memory on your phone) or boot back into Android as normal.

I have switched to a Motorola Droid Bionic, because I missed having new things to play with, having the iPhone was starting to get boring as they only perform updates every 3 months or so. With Android there are different developers and different interpretations of Android, it is just finding the one that you are most comfortable with. Over the past 3 weeks I have tried out 3 different Ice Cream Sandwich roms 2 from Team Gummy and 1 from Cyanogen Mod I will link provide a link to all of the roms that I have used. All of the roms have CM9 (Cyanogen Mod) as their base and they each have their problems but that is the fun part of running things that are still in development.

Each rom has their pro’s and cons. Each one of the roms have the same con’s which are the Camcorder is not working, can not play games on your phone, can not watch flash based video and on some of the roms the data is very unstable.

Pro’s are that ICS is must faster than Gingerbread and battery life and much smoother performance from Gingerbread.

The First Rom I encountered was

Team Gummy GummySpearment 3.2.1 (download) (gAPPS)

This rom was great to start then after I rebooted I lost all data usage, and I tried using the all of the tricks I found on XDA-Developers and DroidHive which is to go to the Wireless and Networks->Mobile Networks-> Network Mode and then change from GSM to CDMA/LTE. I also tried *#*#4636#*#* and doing all of the radio checks, and it would maybe work again. It was always a struggle with getting the data to work. So I went with a newer version of Gummy and found Gummy Targa 1.20 which was the latest update I could find from Team Gummy.

Gummy Targa 1.20 (download) (gAPPS)

This rom has all of the same problems as Spearmint Gummy but the data was somewhat more managable. It would only drop maybe 1 or 2 times in a 24 hour period, but the thing for me was it was even harder for it to sync back up. I had to make it engage 3g for a minute and then turn on the LTE/CDMA connection to make it go into 4g.

Cyanogen Mod BIONIC-CM9 (download) (gAPPS) (nightlies)

The latest rom I have been using is from Cyanogen Mod it is an unofficial release from Cyanogen Mod. So far I have not had any issues with the data connection on this rom, but have ran into the same problems as I had with Gummy. That being the Adobe Flash is not working, can not play games, and the video camera is not working. I really like the Cyanogem Mod rom the best so far.

If you have any questions on how to install any of these roms, I will be doing a write up with instructions on how to do so and what tools I recommend to use.

If you have a rom you would like me to test out please send me a message on Twitter @Cincygeek

Them image to the left is the hero image and as it points out that it will be focused on the iOS and OSX platforms. All of the other tech blogs are stating that there will not be an iPhone 5 announcement, but just a conference on software platforms. If we all recall when Apple announced the iPhone 3gs it was not on the agenda for WWDC 2009 but it was announced with out anyone really knowing much about it.

The biggest question that is to be raised, will Steve Jobs be off of his medical leave in time for WWDC? I hope Steve is doing well and can come back to Apple as soon as possible. You can read the post about Steve Jobs here

Why would Google now cut off the access to the latest operating system? Could it be to stop people from putting it on items it should not be on, in lieu of people rooting the Barnes and Noble Nook Color and putting Honeycomb onto it.

What I really think they are pushing for here, could be Google is actually creating their own tablet that will be contending with the Apple iPad2 and the only way to knock them out of the park would be to keep it in a closed enviroment, and not allow the competition to actually be able to spy on the whole process and make future changes before the new product is completed.

Is Blackberry too late for the Tablet Game? They announced the Playbook last year @ CES 2010 and are just now able to bring the tablet to the market. Blackberry has been making alot of changes to the Playbook to ensure that it will be able to fit in when it does reach the market. One key feature that no other platform has, is the Playbook can install Android Apps. This brings to BlackBerry to the Android OS or a linux based OS, but it does appear they have brokered an agreement with Google to allow the use of Android Apps on the Playbook.

I am looking forward to another tablet to be on the market to give the iPad some competition.

Apple has released Apple iOS 4.3 today, and there are some great upgrades for the iDevice user. Also there is word leaking from Apple analysts stating that the mythical White iPhone4 will be released in April, just 2 months prior to the WWDC in June where the iPhone 5 will be announced.

The iOS 4.3 specs include a much faster Safari

Mobile Safari now benefits from the same Nitro JavaScript engine that powers the desktop version, which should make browsing the web much faster.

iOS 4.3 brings AirPlay to your iPhone videos

The new release fixes the strange omission in AirPlay where you couldn’t send videos from your iPhone camera roll to your Apple TV. AirPlay has been dramatically improved in iOS 4.3: third-party apps will be able to take advantage of it, so you won’t be limited to Apple’s own apps when you want to chuck songs, movies or photos at an Apple TV. iOS 4.3 features also include AirPrint wireless printing.

AIRPLAY: AirPlay gets much more useful in iOS 4.3, with third-party apps able to stream content to an Apple TV

iOS 4.3 features include iTunes Home Sharing

Good news for homebodies with huge iTunes libraries: instead of trying to cram a subset of your media collection onto your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad, simply enable iTunes Home Sharing and stream your music, photos, podcasts or videos from your Mac or PC. Voila: every iOS device has unlimited storage until you leave the house.

iOS 4.3 brings Personal Hotspots to your iPhone 4

As widely predicted, iOS 4.3 brings a nifty new feature to iPhone 4 users: personal hotspots, which turn your iPhone (iPhone 4s only) into a Wi-Fi access point for any Wi-Fi devices.

After using the Google Chromium Cr-48 netbook for 24 hours, I am impressed with the quality of the computer, but I do have some things that I am not a fan of about the operating system.

One of the two problems that I have with the computer would be if you want to right click on the mouse pad, you have to use the multi finger gesture that is the same as the Mac Book. Two fingers on the touch pad to make it right click, but with the Chromium OS you need to physically do the finger tap in a certain spot to utilize it. It is so small of a spot that it is hard to locate, so I have been opting to use the CTRL+Click method to perform the right click.

The second problem is a known bug for the operating system, after watching a movie or some kind of video the sound is tinney and screechy. The only way I have been able to fix it, is to close the browser and reopen the tab.

With this still being in beta I am fully understanding that it is not as polished as I would like. But so far I like where this device is going. This machine is going to be a great internet machine, or social media machine due to the connected cloud possibilities. You can not run apps on the machine it self, but only on the internet. So far my favorite app/add on would be Hootsuite and having a great selection on the Chrome Web store.

So far this machine is nice and off to a good start, but still needs to have the operating system polished and refined. But it is on it’s way.

The specs on this netbook are:

This netbook has

12.1-inch screen.

Full size keyboard.

Oversized clickpad.

Qualcomm Gobi 3G chip for Verizon data in the US, your carrier of choice internationally.

802.11n dual-band WiFi.

8+ hours of active use.

8+ days of standby.

Webcam.

Flash storage.

Intel Pine Trail processor.

100MB of free Verizon data.
